Policegiri Movie Review

Policegiri has Sanjay Dutt playing a boisterous policeman committed to his Policegiri. In his own words, “he is born in Mumbai, brought up in India. “A policeman hell bent to uproot gundagiri from the area under his supervision and establish his policegiri. Prakash Raj plays the goon creating unrest time and again. Prachi Desai is no more than an arm candy and in that small space itself she is perfect.

A rustically stylish policeman DCP Rudra is on the mission to banish criminals from his area of service. He wants to send all the goons behind the bars and establish his Policegiri. A noble intention but the path is predictably hazardous. Prakash Raj plays chief goons among few other villains who continue at their gundagiri. The two men Sanjay Dutt and Prakash Raj are at loggerheads that leads to lot of fights and swearings.

The cast of policegiri includes Sanjay Dutt as Rudra, Prachi Desai as Sehar,Prakash Raj as Nagori Subramaniyam, Om Puri,Rajpal Yadav,Manoj Joshi, Mukesh Tiwari. The movie originally intended to be made of as the sequel to Thaanedar , the 1990s hit of Sanjay Dutt, was changed into Policegiri as suggested by Sanjay himself. Sanjay objected to bank on the success of the old movie and it was reasonable as the makers of the film were different. This Policegiri was supposed to be a fresh film but paradoxically it is stale and boring. Prachi Desai is the only delectable thing in the film with her beauty and charm. The south talent Prakash Raj is in a predictable role of a villain. Though there is no doubt about the actor’s talent, he is wasted in a flat powerless script like this.

Sanjay Dutt is stale to say the least. His dialogues, his shouts, his action …way far than impressing. The viewer looks for at least one thing interesting in the movie and gets disappointed. An outdated and worn out concept drives the story and renders it plain. It is not boring for the script offers something or the other at each point. But it is not enjoyable at all for the predictable story.

This one is not at all recommended specially if your’s is a hard earned weekend.

Lootera Review

Lootera scores as a sparkling romantic tale

Lootera is produced by biggies namely Ekta Kapoor,Shobha Kapoor,Anurag Kashyap and Vikas Bahl . The story set in the Bengal of 1950s is an official adaptation of O. Henry’s short story “ The Last Leaf “. This Vikramaditya Motwane directed film, stars Sonakshi Sinha and Ranvir Singh in the lead.

If poignant love stories was a genre well defined in Hindi cinema, this one would find a special reckoning in it. How more soulful could love be than what is portrayed in Vikramaditya Motwane’s vision that so comes to life on the screen in his Lootera. We remember this director for his last directed much acclaimed movie Udaan. This one, being only his second venture, evoked much excitement from the trailers and songs. And I tell you all the curiosity was worth and it was well paid off. If you’re a fan of romance on the celluloid or romance in art and fiction this one is a treat for you. For any movie goer it is no less a piece of beauty. Wonderful music and cinematography forms the highlights of the film. And its soul is the flawless performances which will go down as benchmarks in Hindi cinema. It has the feel of a cult classic romance. I myself forgot the time I live in and was transported in the 1950s where the story takes shapes.

Ranvir Singh is the Lootera of the story. In the guise of an archeologist, he is comes to Manikpur with an intention to steal an ancient idol. Varun ( Ranvir) who is an effortless charmer succeeds to win hearts of a prominent family of the area. In due course he creates a special place in the heart of Pakhi ( Sonakshi Sinha ) , the Zamindar’s daughter. Pakhi , the beautiful young women falls in love with Varun but the Lootera flees on the night of their engagement. Pakhi is estranged and devastated but carries on with life until a day when she faces the Lootera once again. This part of the story is faithful to its original that is O. Henry ‘s “The Last Leaf” in which an ailing girl Johnsy is befallen in love by a charmer named Behrman who leaves her.

So does love dry out after a heart break? Can a woman be foolishly forgiving so as to defy her self respect? Pakhi is overwhelmed by wounded love but is that enough for her to hate her lover? Sonakshi expresses all the perplexed emotions with the skill of a true actor. She catches all attention in the part of the story where Ranvir disappears, and handles it with much quality of acting. The actress has come good in the role that can be any actress’s dream. She outshines Ranvir Singh by a small margin by her ingenuity to present Pakhi as innocently loveable yet pained in love. Ranvri on the other hand in indeed a Lootera for he steals the show. He is at his flirtatious best in the beginning. And in the latter half, he becomes the hero in the conflict of emotions and purpose.

A big commendation is deserved by the cinematographer Mahendra Shetty. As also by the music composer Amit Trivedi. Without the artistic work of these two Lootera would not be such a poetic tale. But the credit is much more deserved by the director Vikramaditya Motwane who is the writer, director of Lootera. Though it is an adaptation, yet the treatment given to it is timelessly classic.
